One of the largest ports in the world, Rotterdam has a long history of international trade. The warehouses on the Kop van Zuid that were used for handling merchandise to and from the East Indies attest to the city's commercial past. As well, Hotel New York remains an icon of the Holland-America Line. The 20th Century has taken a toll on the city with the Second World War and the bombardment of May 1940. The city was never the same afterwards, yet it was reborn from its ashes and transformed into one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe.
